A really exciting hike in Taiwan is from Nanya to Jiufen (near Taipei) across the so called Stegosaurus Ridge. There are easy parts like stairs in the beginning, sections with a lot of reed and a big spider, more difficult parts like hiking through a riverbed, climbing up with a rope or hiking across the (Stegosaurus) ridge. But in the end it was an amazing hike with a lot of lookouts from Nanya to Jiufen, challenging sections in hiking and navigation and a stunning sunset near the famous Teapot mountain.
There are several starts for this hike. We have chosen the town Nanya. From Taipei to Nanya it takes about an hour by bus. In Nanya you can also see some stone formations that were washed out by the sea. These are small, but with the stony coast it is a really great place.
Coast of Nanya
Via stairs you go up the mountain Nan Zi Lin Shan Dong Feng (南子吝山東峰). It has an altitude difference of almost 200 m. From there you have a great view of the coast. Countless photo spots can be found there. There we also saw this big spider (Nephila pilipes - giant golden orb weaver). It is one of the biggest web spiders in the world with 5 to 6 centimeters body length. Wuuuhhhh...

At the Nanya lookout, you get a great view of Stegosaurus Ridge (the ridge below the highest peak) and Teapot Mountain (the small prominent peak to the right). From there it goes down through a lot of reeds to the riverbed.
The hike down from the lookout point in Nanya to the riverbed goes through a lot of reeds. At the beginning you get a great view of the river and the mountains (see following picture). Down there in the riverbed you go through a small gorge and then you hike up the steep mountain behind, on ropes, to the beginning of the Stegosaurus Ridge.
Be careful: the way down also consists of a lot of clay. Do not walk it if it has rained before. Then the hike down is very slippery, the river level is probably higher and the increase of the path on ropes risky, because it's difficult to find a secure grip with your feet.
In good weather, however, this hike is awesome - a real adventure!

Start of the Stegosaurus Ridge
Stegosaurus Ridge is only a small part of the ridge hike. Up to the mountain Banping Shan (半屏山) at 613 m the ridge continues. A quite amazing adventure!
From up there you have a breathtaking view to the Teapot Mountain (無耳茶壺山), Jiufen and beautiful sunset. To arrive in Jiufen you will go through(!) the Teapot Mountain (through a small hole) to Jiufen. From Jiufen we went back to Taipei by bus.
